From the monthly archives:
I know that many people have been coming here over the last few weeks looking for information on the Run of the Mill brewpub in Saco, Maine which opened just a few weeks ago. And if anyone has been there yet then I’m sure you know that, despite being a brewpub, ROTM has yet to have any of their own beer on tap (while their interim line-up features some fine brews from Geary’s, Shipyard and the like, it’s just not the same).
Well, I was told from an inside source today — Sean Sweeney, Maine Correspondent of Yankee Brew News magazine — that “The Mill” will be tapping 6 of their own brews (including their Stout, Lager, IPA, Brown, alewife and one other whose name escaped Sean) during the first week in September.
So there you have it; I hope that helps anyone who has come here looking for Run of the Mill news (and thank you for coming, of course!) and hopefully I’ll see you all in Saco during the beginning of September. And you can look for a review of the Run of the Mill shortly there after.
Cheers!

There seems to be a real social media theme going on in the world of blogaboutbeer.com this week – first all of the new beer-related iPhone applications, then the “crowdfunding”-based brewery BeerBankRoll. And today, to cap it off, a buddy of mine pointed out the (relatively) new BrewSocial (part of the LivingSocial network, which also includes TuneSocial, ReelSocail, and DiningSocial, among others) network. From what I’ve been able to gather, BrewSocial focuses on 5 specific functions – organize, discover, link, share & talk.
- Organize: A utility first and foremost, BrewSocial provides you the tools you need to keep your collection in order.
- Discover: We make recommendations based on your collection.
- Link: You can link your BrewSocial account to Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, HI5, and Orkut. We’ll place your collection on your profile.
- Share: BrewSocial connects to the social networks you already maintain so you don’t need to start from scratch.
- Talk: Each beer has its own discussion board and review wall.
I have yet to try the service myself but from the look of it – if you’re big into “social media” and beer, than this would be a fun application to play around with. And you may even discover some new beers! According to the LivingSocial homepage, more than 6 million people have signed up across their network (which again includes 6 different applications similar to BrewSocial) and those 6 million members have cataloged nearly 88 million items. If this sounds like something that might be up your alley, you can check it out at beer.livingsocial.com. Are you a member already? What do you think?

Ever wanted to own your very own brewery but just didn’t have the start-up capital? Well now, thanks to the
help of BeerBankRoll (and tens of thousands of other members) for an investment of just $50 you can own a piece of a brewery.
Chicago-based BeerBankRoll is founded on a “crowdfunding” concept where its members are hoping to raise $100,000 to open a brewing company and pub. The paying members can start voting on the company name, beer recipes, marketing plan, advertising strategy, and everything else that’s needed to start a brewery.
Company profits (when the time comes) will be split into three parts: one to members, who’ll get “rewards points” to spend in the online store (for things like gift cards, LCD TVs, and company merch); one to the company itself; and the third to charities of the group’s choosing.
To find out more, or to become an invester yourself, check out beerbankroll.com!

Today, August 2th, marks the one year anniversary of BlogAboutBeer.com. When I got into blogging a year ago, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. The site was a mess, my stories were a mess and I didn’t think I would (or should) stick with it.
Now a year later, it’s grown into a full-fledged obsession. I’ve met and talked with a lot of great people – especially those in the local Portland beer scene – from all across the brewing industry and gotten to do a lot of great things and taste a lot of great beer I’m sure I wouldn’t have done otherwise.
But the best part has been, while I’ve been trying to educate others about all things beer, I’ve really educated myself. I’ve learned more about beer (and grown a larger obsession) than I ever expected.
And it seems to have paid off… 380 posts later, hundreds of people now check out blogaboutbeer.com — and well over 100 more access the site via its RSS feed – every day! So thank you all so much for your support throughout the year; I hope it leads to many, many more.
To celebrate the one year anniversary, I’m throwing a huge blog contest early in September, with lots of great prizes and incentives (if you represent a company who would like to donate a prize of your own, please contact me!), so be sure and check back in a few weeks for all of the details!
Thanks again for reading; keep coming back and I’ll keep writing. For now, I’m going to grab a beer. Cheers!
